Elsey National Park is 13,840 hectares in size. It is located 7 km east of the Mataranka township, which is approximately 100 km south of Katherine, on the Stuart Highway.

Elsey includes the upper reaches of the Roper River and the Mataranka Thermal Springs Nature Reserve. The clear waters of the Roper River provide tranquil spots for canoeing, swimming and fishing. The popular Mataranka Thermal Pool surrounded by a forest of Livistona rigida palms, paper barks and pandanus is part of this park. The best time to visit the park is in the dry season from May until September, as during the wet season flooding of the Roper River curtails some activities.

A camping area and a number of day-use areas have been developed along the Roper River in Elsey National Park. Further information on their location, fees and any special conditions that apply can be obtained from the Rangers based at Mataranka.

Walking tracks are still being developed at Elsey so drop into the Ranger Station in Mataranka to see the range of walks available. Tel. (089) 75 4560. You can enjoy a 1.2 kilometre walk from the thermal pool to Stevies Hole, or a 4 kilometre walk to the Mataranka Falls. For those interested in birds, there is a ranger guided walk from the 12 Mile Yards on Wednesday mornings at 7.30 am.

The Elsey National Park Botanical Walk is 1.5 kilometres in length. There is a whole host of interesting plant specimens for everyone to enjoy. Fern species, shrubs, vines and many, many trees inhabit the area. Not surprisingly then, you will find that much of the walk is under cover of pleasant, elegant trees. Apart from the flora side of things, there are also countless bird types to watch out for, particularly early in the morning.

You can enjoy a spot of fishing and barramundi fishing controls apply within the park. There is also a boat ramp, ideal for both boats and canoes at 12 Mile Yards and at Mataranka Homestead.
