Eastlakes is a locality of the municipality of Botany, situated south of Sydney. Eastlakes sits within a stones throw of the waters of Botany Bay, which harboured Captain James Cook and the crew of the Endeavour in 1770. No doubt the story of this suburb would have unfolded quite differently had it been colonised by the First Fleet in 1788 as intended. Despite glowing recommendations from Cook and Sir Joseph Banks, Captain Arthur Phillip found Botany Bay and its surrounds to be unsuitable for colonisation. Subsequently the protected waters of Port Jackson were resolved for the site of the new colony.

The sandy and swampy environs of the Eastlakes region exemplify Governor Phillip's objection to the area. Although not a perfect foundation for a city's infrastructure, the vicinity has proved ideal for residences and other establishments. Local Eastlakes residents, as well as visitors from other suburbs, enjoy the extensive Eastlakes shopping complex. The local golf course is built around the intricate tapestry of the water system after which the suburb is named. Amateurs and professionals alike test their skill dodging the lake obstacles. Eastlakes also supports much aviation activity, as the neighbouring suburb of Mascot is home to Sydney's domestic and international airport. As expansion continues with the newly completed third runway, the surrounding suburbs including Eastlakes, will become further absorbed into the airport's planning.
