Derby is located in the West Kimberley Region just over 200 kilometres fromBroome and is best known for its symbol of the boab tree. Derby is the administrative centre for a pastoral and mining region, which is also rich in Aboriginal culture.

One of the first independent Aboriginal settlements, Mowanjum was estbalished in the area, just south of Derby.


Historic Attractions

A natural prison in the form of a 14m wide boab tree is located 7 kilometres from Derby and was thought to have been used a an overnight cell for the Aborigine outlaw Jundumurra as he was being transported to Derby. This tree is only found in the Kimberley Region and in the Northern Territory.

The wharf at Derby is the third such structure and the last commercial ship visited the port in 1983. Live cattle exportation occurred from Derby in the 1960s and 70s. Derby experiences the highest tides in the southern hemisphere reaching up to 10.8 metres.

Old Derby gaol was constructed in the 1880s and is situated next to the present day police station. Wharfingers House was built during the 1920s for the harbour master and today houses a museum and art gallery.

The shire buildings are constructed from Jowlaenga sandstone and have the anchor and propeller of the SS Colac which ran aground off Derby in 1910 on display in the garden area.

Other Attractions

Myall's Bore is located next to the Boab Prison Tree and is one of the longest cattle troughs in Australia at 120 metres in length. It was drilled in 1911 and is filled with water from an artesian bore about 322 metres deep.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service is situated in Derby and allows visitors to inspect the premises and ask any questions they may have about the work of the RFDS.

The Botanic Garden and Art Gallery located in Clarendon street welcomes visitors wishing to admire the art displays and stroll through the palm tree garden.
