William Cox was appointed as a Lieutenant on September 28th 1797, and three years later he and his family arrived in Sydney on board the "Minerva". He is best known as the man who pioneered the first road across the Blue Mountains in 1815. His son, James Cox, was to be influential in the development of the Tasmanian Merino sheep industry.
