from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Circular Quay, built around Sydney Cove, was for a long time the main shipping area in Sydney Harbour and was made into a semi-circle in the 1830s. Today the Quay is the departure point for all the Sydney ferry services, and is also a major bus terminal. It also boasts a railway station and a taxi rank making it a major transport junction in the city. Circular Quay was revamped in 1988 during the Bicentennial celebrations and is considered by some to be one of the focal points of the city.

The Museum of Contemporary Art is located on the western side of Circular Quay and has extensive displays of modern art and temporary exhibitions on more unusual themes for visitors to contemplate. Further west is Campbells Cove where the replica ship the Bounty is moored, and where sumptuous cuisine may be savoured in any of the fine restaurants along the waterfront. On the eastern side of the Quay is of course the world famous Sydney Opera House. The Customs House built in 1885 and situated on Alfred Street is also a site of historic interest.
