Cervantes, lies near the settlement of Jurien was named after the whaling ship "Cervantes" which was wrecked at an island in Jurien Bay in June 1844. The small settlement was first surveyed in 1969 and developed into a fishing and holiday resort. Professional rock lobster fishermen operate from Cervantes and during the season about 600 tonnes of lobsters and other crustaceans are sent for processing to three local depots.
