Cervantes, lies near the settlement of Jurien was named after the whaling ship "Cervantes" which was wrecked at an island in Jurien Bay in June 1844. The small settlement was first surveyed in 1969 and developed into a fishing and holiday resort. Professional rock lobster fishermen operate from Cervantes and during the season about 600 tonnes of lobsters and other crustaceans are sent for processing to three local depots. This industry earns millions of dollars in exports to America and Japan.

Natural Attractions

The reef protected cove makes Cervantes an ideal fishing location for both the professional and the amateur.

The eerie Pinnacles Desert located in the Nambung National Park was first noted in 1658 by Dutch explorers but it was not until a team of stockmen recorded the amazing structures while searching for errant stock. There are thousands of these limestone pinnacles which began to form during the Ice Age and they stand over 400 hectares like a natural cemetery. Visitors should explore the area in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun casts startling shadows over the rippling sand.

Other Events

Cervantes also hosts a World Cup Slalom Sailboarding Championships and is well known for it's ideal windsurfing conditions.
