Martin Cash was born in 1808, and was sentenced to a seven year stretch in the New South Wales penal colony for larceny in 1827. He duly completed his sentence and was granted a ticket of leave in 1837, when he decided to head for Tasmania. However two years later he was convicted again for larceny, and after an attempted escape was given another 4 years on top of his 7 year sentence.

A second attempt at escape was more successful, and Cash became a bushranger, robbing inns and the houses of wealthy landowners and merchants. He was eventually arrested in Hobart, and sentenced to death. His sentence was commuted to a life stretch on Norfolk Island. In 1854 he was again granted a ticket of leave, and after spending 4 years in New Zealand he returned to Tasmania and settled on a farm near Hobart. Martin Cash died in 1877.
