Robert Campbell was born in 1769 and began to trade in Sydney in 1798, when he commenced importing cattle and general merchandise from India. He constructed several warehouses and a wharf at Sydney Cove, later becoming involved in the administration of the colony.
He was a supporter of Governor William Bligh and was arrested in 1809 when Bligh was deposed, later being reinstated by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1810. He received large land grants from Governor Sir Ralph Darling during the 1820s and 1830s.
Campbell died in 1846.
