(1770 - 1829)

Caley was born in Yorkshire, England, in 1770 and was appointed by Sir Joseph Banks to collect natural history specimens from the New South Wales colony. He had previously worked in Kew Gardens before leaving for Sydney in 1800.

Over the next ten years he collected a wealth of bird and animal descriptions, plants and seeds from various areas in the colony, such as the Blue Mountains, the Hunter River and from Van Diemens Land (Tasmania).
