Cairns was originally founded as a port for inland goldfields in 1876. Barely enough scrub was cleared away to make room for their tents.

Natural Attractions

The Great Barrier Reef is world famous for its stunning beauty, diverse fish life, and quite simply for being one of the largest and most complex coral reefs in the world. Visitors can experience close up the wonders of the Reef by scuba diving or snorkelling, or for those who cannot swim, there are glass bottom boats and underwater observatories. The area surrounding Cairns is also classed as wet tropics, with large expanses of rain forest. To the north of Cairns, lie 26 kms of the Marlin Coast, lined with palm trees. This large beach area is where all of the water sports action takes place, from swimming to angling.
