The Australian War Memorial commemorates the sacrifices of those Australians who have died in war. It seeks to promote a better understanding of the Australian experience of war. The Australian War Memorial Building was officially opened on 11 November 1941, and many visitors are deeply moved by the sense of tragedy the Memorial expresses.

The Memorial is the site of National Anzac and Remembrance Day ceremonies, and assists with the organisation of many other commemorative functions. A unique commemorative institution, the Memorial functions as a museum, an archive and a centre of research. Its central courtyard includes a number of commemorative features, most notably the Roll of Honour listing the names of Australian war dead. There are a number of exhibitions throughout the centre focusing on individual wars, and aspects of war.

Free guided tours of the Memorial are conducted daily, and there are a number of displays throughout the Memorial including collections of war relics, works of art, photographs, film and sound recordings, documents and personal papers that evoke and explain the experiences of war. The Research Centre houses Australia's most extensive collection of the writings of ordinary men and women in wartime and extensive archival materials.
