The Botanic Gardens maintains a collection of native plants from all over Australia. The first trees were planted in the Garden in 1949. After extensive development, the Gardens opened in 1970 and now house a collection of over 90,000 plants representing more than 5,000 species.

In addition to the decorative plantings, the gardens have been organised into displays containing plants which grow in a similar environments. There are a number of walking trails through the Gardens, and visitors can tour trails that pass through rainforests, eucalypt lawns, wattles, a special exhibition on the diverse range of plants found in the Sydney Basin, as well as a rock garden, banksia garden and proteaceae display. One of the more unusual tours through the Gardens is a trail which passes through the rainforest gully and the lower slopes of the Gardens, and marks plant used by Aboriginals for foods and medicine.
