The Australian Institute of Sport is a part of the program of the Australian Sports Commission that provides facilities and assistance, including sports science and sports medicine services, to potential elite athletes.
The Australian Institute of Sports was opened by the Federal Government in 1981 as a venue to provide first class coaching and training facilities for Australia's athletes. Athletes at the Institute receive scholarships that may include board, educational allowance, coaching, travel and a variety of other benefits and services.
The Institute's initial program included specialist training facilities for gymnastics, basketball, netball, swimming, tennis, weight-lifting and athletics. Hockey, water polo and rowing were later introduced. Tours of the complex conducted by some of Australia's leading athletes enable visitors to tour the Institute and see many of its facilities, including the National Outdoor Stadium, Athletics Field, Swimming Centre, National Indoor Sports Centre and Gymnastics Halls.
A two-storey Sports Science and Medicine Centre is one of the more interesting centres within the Institute. It accommodates the sciences of physiology, biochemistry, biomechanics and psychology as well as a medical treatment and physiotherapy department. The Centre has the facilities to enable the analysis of athlete's action and effort, together with high-speed frozen frame photography to minutely examine performance. Visitors can learn more about the Centre when on tour of the Institute.
