Buckland, Tasmania : Main Article
Buckland is a village located on the south east coast of Tasmania, 66 kilometres from the city of Hobart, and nearby to the town of Orford.
In 1841 a convict Probation Station was established in Buckland (then known as Prosser Plains), and a convict-built road was constructed to link the town with Triabunna. Remnants of the road can still be seen in the town today. The town was renamed Buckland in 1846, the same year that construction began on the historic Church of St. John the Baptist.
The main attraction in Buckland is the beautiful Church of St. John the Baptist, constructed in 1846, and a fine example of Colonial architecture. The stained glass east window depicts the life of John the Baptist and is said to date to the 14th century. The window was installed in 1849 when it was given to the Rev T.H. Fox, the first rector of Buckland. It was believed to have been originally made for Battle Abbey in Hastings, England.
