from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Brunette Downs Station was taken up in the 1880s, taking in some 120,000 square kilometres. Located south east of Newcastle Waters, Harry Readford, otherwise known as 'Captain Starlight' brought the first cattle here, forming the Downs.

His name derives from his infamous theft of thousands of cattle which he drove 1500 miles through unmapped desert. It was a distinctive white English bull which eventually gave him away. Although he was tried in a court of law, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty.

Not terribly far from here you will find Connells Lagoon Conservation Reserve. This is an area covering nearly 26,000 hectares, with an abundance of birdlife, amongst other natural features.
