Mathew Brady was born in 1799 and was transported to Van Diemens Land in 1820 following his conviction for forgery. In 1824 Brady, along with six others, escaped from a boat in Macquarie Harbour, site of the Sarah Island convict station.

For the next two years Brady and his gang roamed throughout the State causing havoc, frightening settlers in newly formed colonies and deterring settlers in some areas. Brady was captured and executed in 1826.
