In 1860 two men, Burke and Wills travelled through this region and named the Burke River, upon which the town stands, and the Wills River. It was from this River that the two refilled their waterbags and so today a sign can be found inviting visitors to do the same.

The town was founded in 1876 and is known as the capital of the 'Channel Country'.

The Stone Cottage Museum is to be found in Pituri Street.

The Simpson Desert is quite closeby and its dangers are warned of by the 'red stump' which is to be found in the town's main street.
