Boat Harbour, Tasmania : Main Article
Boat Harbour, originally known as Jacobs Boat Harbour, is located 3 kilometres off the Bass Highway from the area's main attraction, Boat Harbour Beach. The golden sands, clear waters and crescent shaped beach make this a particularly popular and safe swimming spot.
It was Captain John Jacobs who provided the original name for the town. He supposedly fell asleep whilst sailing past here in the early 1830s and drifted into the area. A jetty was built in the last century, as in those early days the only transport to this part of Tasmania was via the sea. It was soon discovered, however, that Boat Harbour was not the most suitable harbour because of the strong off-shore seas which would often lead to shipping delays. The area has now developed into a popular coastal destination for visitors.
The safety of the beach makes it an ideal diving spot with ample opportunity to photograph the spectacular coral formations. Beach Fishing is another activity that proves popular with visitors. The local craft cottage is open to visitors wishing to browse through their extensive range of locally produced handcrafts, or those wishing to have a light lunch or Devonshire Tea. The adjacent holiday complex has been designed around an Irish theme and is worth a visit. Boat Harbour is near to the Rocky Cape National Park which makes an ideal day trip.
