from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Birdsville, originally known as 'Diamantina Crossing', received its present name in 1885. There are numerous theories as to the origin of the name. Some believe that locals had wanted to name the town after a settler, J. Burt. He declined the offer and the name Birdsville was devised as a compromise. Yet others argue that it was the areas extensive birdlife which was the inspiration for the name.

The town is the start of the famous Birdsville Track which is an historic stock route some 500km in length. Tolls collected from stock and supplies which were en route to South Australia, were the towns principal source of income up until 1901.
