from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Batman Bridge is located 38 kilometres from Launceston and spans the turbulent Tamar River at Whirlpool Reach. This bridge is one of the first cable strayed truss bridges constructed in the world, and was opened in 1968 at a cost in excess of $3.5 million. The span of the bridge is 206 metres, and at its highest point it is 100 metres. The frame is at a 20 degree incline, and it reaches out just less than 30 metres across the river.

The bridge was named for John Batman, the founder of Melbourne, who had spent the earlier years of his life in Tasmania. The Bridge area has a pleasant picnic spot with a Visitor Information Centre listing attractions in the local area, and tremendous views of the Tamar River.
