Located some 200 kilometres from Tennant Creek and 270 kilometres from Camooweal. The grasslands of the Barkly Tableland circumvent the Homestead which is the only significant stopover place between the Queensland border and the Stuart Highway.

The Tablelands were named by William Landsborough after Sir Henry Barkly who was the Governor of Victoria in 1861. They were in fact discovered by Leichhardt in 1845 though, and it was not until the 1870s that the area was opened up for settlement with the emergence of stations around the Barkly Tablelands. Originally these were sheep stations but they turned to cattle and now account for some of the largest cattle stations in Australia. It was to protect the early stock routes that a police outpost was set up in 1895, remaining in use until 1979.

Connells Lagoon Conservation Reserve lies east of Brunette Downs off the Tablelands Highway, and is also quite close to Alexandria Station. The black soil plains support four species of Mitchell grass and abundant bird life.
