Bark Hut, Northern Territory : Main Article
Bark Hut is located along the Arnhem Highway on the way to Kakadu National Park.
Facilities include accommodation, a general store, a bar, hot meals, takeaway food, and a shaded barbecue area. Fuel is available 7 days a week. There is also a wildlife enclosure, allowing up close looks at the animals.
The Marrakai Conservation Reserve comprises a portion of the Marrakai plains and forms a portion of the catchment and drainage for the Adelaide River. You will reach the reserve on your way to Bark Hut along the Arnhem Highway. It is important as a feeding and roosting site for water birds such as Magpie Geese, Egrets, Brolgas and duck species.
Just beside Bark Hut you will find the Mary River Crossing Conservation Reserve. The Mary River is a popular spot for barramundi fishing and boating. Its permanent lagoons are dry season homes for many waterbirds and crocodiles.
The area's granite outcrops shelter a variety of interesting animals including the black wallaroo and short-eared rock-wallaby. The Wildman and Shady Camp Reserves are also very close to Bark Hut. They are accessible via a turn off from the Arnhem Highway beyond Bark Hut on your way to Kakadu National Park.
