Along the Brisbane River, the South Bank Parklands has some 16 hectares of gardens and parklands. Here the Gondwana Rainforest Sanctuary and the South Bank Butterfly and Insect House can be visited. It is an ideal location for picnics and a swim at City Beach is always a refreshing option on hot summer days.
The Brisbane Forest Park is a total of 26,500 hectares which has walking trails through stunning rainforest and offers visitors an excellent opportunity of viewing the native wildlife at first hand.
Brisbane is the koala capital of Australia. These cute furry marsupials can be seen at one of many fauna parks, most of which are located on the outskirts of the city. The Lone Pine Sanctuary, Alma Park Zoo and Bunya Park are but three examples of such parks.
There are two Botanical Gardens in the city. The City Gardens is the oldest (having been established in 1824) and has an admirable collection of mature trees. It is situated at the south end of George Street. The Mount Coot-tha Botanical Gardens is divided into themed sections, which include scented gardens, rainforest walks, a Japanese garden, an arid climate zone, to name a few.
The Raven Street Reserve in the Chermside Hills covers 24 hectares and incorporates the Downfall Creek Bushland Centre which is an environmental reserve. The Reserve possesses wonderful examples of flora and fauna.
