Avon Downs, Northern Territory : Main Article

from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

Avon Downs was occupied by Thomas Guthrie in the 1880s. Today, it is a 3400 square kilometres station, situated on Shakespeare Creek and James River.

As with Alexandria, the government tried to impose extreme amounts of customs duty on the essential stores that were brought in to the station. In order to avoid paying the duty, the owners of the station chose to have the stores brought in by sea via Borroloola, rather than the 'taxable' way overland. The tactic was successful, and paved the way for many similar enterprises in the Northern Territory.

Avon Downs is about 60 kilometres from the border of the Northern Territory and Queensland, and is on the Barkly Highway. There are no tourist facilities in the area, other than a rest area by the highway which has a barbecue/fireplace and a table.
