Atherton, Queensland : Main Article
Atherton which is situated within the Atherton Tablelands, is a tropical wonderland with rainforests, waterfalls, mountains and volcanic crater lakes. The Tablelands were formed as a result of block faulting of the earths crust some 50 million years ago and since then there was considerable volcanic upheaval.
There are many natural attractions within easy reach of the town. The Volcanic Crater Lakes, Eacham and Barrine are National Parks situated to the east of Atherton. It is here that the most recent Australian volcanic eruptions have taken place. The two lakes have delightful swimming and picnicking facilities, as well as interesting walking tracks.
There are numerous other National Parks within the vicinity, including Mount Hypipamee, Malanda Falls and Chillagoe Caves, all containing diverse and fascinating wildlife and great walks.
The Tinaroo Dam, north east of Atherton, is renowned for its water sport activities : water skiing, wind surfing, canoeing, swimming and sailing. The Dam also has great camping facilities.
The Carrington Falls just south of the town is ideal for bush walking and taking in the spectacular surrounding nature and wildlife, which is in abundance in this vicinity.
The Broomfield Swamp, south east of Atherton, is a superb example of the areas volcanic history. It is the site of a large extinct volcanic crater which is famous for its Sarus Cranes. It is also a must for bird watchers with many breeds to be observed around the Swamp.
Other Attractions
The Crystal Caves situated on Atherton's Main Street contain an amazing medley of gems, fossils and crystals. The owners of the caves have collected the various treasures from around the world over the last thirty years. Going through the passages, the visitor will be in awe at the wonderment of nature creating such beautiful things. The many stalagmites and stalactites add to the mining atmosphere.
