from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

The Southern Forests are within easy reach of Hobart, and they continue to be a great source of sawlog timber - primarily for use in the building of houses in the state. The area is subject to high rainfall, which has resulted in rich soils, and the wet eucalypts dominate the landscape through the river valleys and up into the surrounding mountains.

The Arve Road will take you along The Arve River, and through its valley. It is an unsealed road, but like most of the unsealed roads in Tasmania it is very well maintained as the area still supports logging operations, and driving is therefore possible here in most weather conditions. The road is well signposted, and there are many points of interest along the way.

To ensure that you are fully prepared and make the most of your time in the Southern Forests, a visit to The Esperance Forest and Heritage Centre in Geeveston is recommended prior to your trip. Forest walks with knowledgable guides can be organised at the Centre, or visitors can use an audio tape as their guide.
