Armadale, Western Australia : Main Article
Armadale is located only 27 kilometres south of Perth and is well known for its spectacular wildflowers in Springtime. A variety of other historic and natural attractions await the visitor to Armadale.
Historic Attractions
Gosnells Museum and Orchard has a display of vintage farm machinery as well as other farming implements used by the early pioneers. The Museum is situated on Canning River Orchard Farm.
The Bert Tyler Vintage Machinery Museum is located at the Armadale tourist centre and contains a wide variety of early pioneer machinery and other agricultural implements used on the farms in the area. An engine display is also part of the Museum.
The Pioneer Village and Agridome Farm Show is situated on the corner of South West and Albany Highways and is composed of a complex of authentic pioneer buildings such as shops and stores, a hotel and other businesses. Daily activities include panning for gold, mini train rides, an animal park and weekend street theatre al in an early Australian setting. Live shows with sheep breeds and "Dusty" the sheep dog can also be seen.
History House is located in Jull street and is a complex with a restored school and church dating from 1900 and 1902 respectively. Displays of early agricultural machinery, military barracks, timber cutting and other agricultural memorabilia in addition to Aboriginal history are housed in the complex.
Sullivan Rock is the site of an old convict constructed well and has a number of educational displays along a marked nature trail. Rock climbing is a popular pursuit here.
Natural Attractions
Armadale Settlers Common has a reconstructed Aboriginal campsite adjacent to a number of walking trails and a field study centre with a range of self guided botanical walks which lead to lookouts and gorgeous views of the surrounds.
Wungong Dam is an ideal swimming and boating venue, and Churchman's Brook Dam has large grassy expanses perfect for group picnics. The roads to the Dams are lined with scenic forested valleys.
Pioneer Park has many shady picnic areas and pleasant walks along the shores of the meandering Canning River. The Canning Dam is another scenic spot worth visiting. Seraglio Park has tearooms surrounded by an avocado orchard and lily ponds.
Lesley Forest Park has a one kilometre forest walk that leads visitors past many species of native forest plants and flowers. A variety of wild birds can also be seen or heard. Forrestdale Lake Nature Reserve is an internationally recognised haven for wading waterbirds. Bird watching, cycling and walking around special trails can be enjoyed. Picnic facilities are available on site.
Cohuna Koala Park is situated on Mills Road East and invites visitors to view their Koala colony as well as see kangaroos, emus and other native Australian animals. Araluen Botanical Park is a beautiful garden set amongst cascading waterfalls, tall timbers and rock pools. A number of lake and streamside walks are available for visitors.
Budgendore Park covers 498 hectares incorporating a diverse section of native plants and animals. Particularly prominent in December is the WA Christmas Tree. Bushwalks and nature study can all be indulged in here.
The Reptile Education and Rescue Centre helps to educate visitors about the biology of reptile species and birds. A variety of guided educational displays and live animal exhibits are housed here.
Other Attractions
Araluen Country Club has a world class golf course which is flanked by natural bushland and views of the Canning River Valley. Clubhouse, bars and restaurants are available here.
Camfield Estate on Canns Road is a distinctly coloured pink estate in the romantic theme of Barbara Cartland with a room dedicated to her, herb garden and tea rooms for visitor enjoyment. Scenic views of the area are prevalent on the road to the estate.
Nearby stands the Elizabethan Pub and brewery, a replica of an original English village pub. The pub provides a variety of entertainments and homemade brews to tempt the visitor.
Waterways Farm Studio displays a variety of Western Australia's finest artists works in media such as glass, wood, clay and textiles. Visitors can browse through this impressive collection and enjoy a cup of tea and light refreshments in the adjacent tearooms. The Waterwheel Gallery is home to handcrafted Australian furniture and fine art collections.
