Arkaroola, South Australia : Main Article
Arkaroola is located to the east of the Gammon Ranges and the village iteself is the main focal point for the privately run and owned wildlife sanctuary there, which is an impressive 61,000 hectares in size.
Natural Attractions
The Mt Painter - Arkaroola Sanctuary and Historic Reserve has some breathtaking views of the outback with an abundance of wildlife. There are geological monuments, gorges, waterholes and hot springs to be seen here.
The Paralana Hot Springs are situated north of Arkaroola. The water has its roots very deep within the earth's crust and the spring is in fact the last real remnant of active volcanism in the country.
West of Arkaroola is the Gammon Ranges National Park with its wonderful abundance of rugged scenery and wildlife. There is much to see here, including the Italowie Gorge with red river gums growing by the creek and amazing red quartzite cliffs shooting up towards the sky. 2WD cars can access some of the park but if you wish to leave the main road a 4WD is necesssary. Other Attractions
The Arkaroola Astronomical Observatory is where you will be treated to a detailed glimpses of the clear skies. You will also be able to view the astronomical charts that are on display there too. Bookings are essential, tel. (086) 48 4848.
One of the activities that you must do while in the area, is a tour of the ridges around Arkaroola. There are 4WD tours which will take you in and around gorges, valleys amd ridges. Tel. (086) 48 4848.
Twelve kilometres north west of Arkaroola are the ruins of the Bolla Bollana Smelters. These were built in the early 1860s very much in a Cornish style and today they stand as a memorial to the eforts of early settlers in these harsh abd isolated conditions.
