Ardrossan, South Australia : Main Article
Ardrossan is located on the east of the Yorke Peninsula facing the Gulf St Vincent. The peninsula is well known for its quality grain and wheat, much of which says its farewells to the locality from the cargo areas of large ships docked in Ardrossan, before setting sail for various points around the world.
When the first settlers arrived in the area they had the unenviable task of clearing the land of the large amount of broom brush and mallee which covered practically every inch of the surrounding landscape. They arrived in the early 1870s and lived in dugouts.
Shortly after a farmer by the name of Mullins came up with an ideal invention for those early settlers. He called it the 'mulleniser' and basically it was a heavy roller which was pulled by horses and flattened the scrub, assisting in the development of the settlement. Two brothers who were also farmers invented a contraption called the 'stump jump' plough which helped save farmers in South Australia a lot of time and effort.
