from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

The original founding name of Aramac was Marathon. It was subsequently renamed by the explorer Landsborough. Its new name was an acronym of the then Premier of Queensland, Robert MacKenzie. It was in the 1860s that it developed as a town, and is in fact the oldest centre of local government in the Central West.

There was a tramway in operation between Aramac and Barcaldine during the period 1913 and 1975. It ceased as a service once an all-weather road was constructed between the two towns.

The Tramway Museum provides visitors with the chance to view a variety of artefacts from the era of the trams. 'The Lake' is a small natural lake of interest which is situated 68km north east of Aramac.
