Apollo Bay, nestling in the shadows of the Otway Ranges, was once described by Rudyard Kipling as 'paradise', today the region fully meets with this description offering a variety of beautiful natural attractions including cool fern gullies, rushing streams, magnificent waterfalls and rainforests, as well as wonderful calm waters and superb ocean views.
At Apollo Bay, The Great Ocean Road which hugs the south-west coast of Victoria, weaves through the contours of steep cliffs to give holiday-makers a broad sweeping view of the magnificent beach and coastal waters. The Bay offers fabulous views and a cypress flag grassed picnic area where, sheltered by giant tree ferns, visitors can enjoy idyllic ocean scenes and the superb Otway Ranges or perhaps take scenic walks .
Within the Bay area, the charming estuarine villages of Wye River and Kennett River and Cape Patton - one of the greatest viewing points on the Australian Seaboard- offer visitors incredible views and access to the picturesque Carisbrook Falls. From the Marriner's Lookout there are superb views and the magnificent Marriner's Falls, while delightful country areas in lush farmland along the Barham River give visitors another perspective on the region's outstanding beauty.
Within the town itself there are a number of activities for visitors to enjoy. The area offers a range of sporting facilities including bowls, tennis or golf where almost every hole has a superb ocean view and horse riding through the magnificent country side is a delight for riders with all levels of experience .
On the water, visitors can choose between relaxed pursuits such as fishing or sailing the lazy waters to water skiing, surfing, yachting and windsurfing. Scenic flights offered from a number of the coast's air strips are a spectacular way to experience the beauty of the coast and for those with a taste for adventure hang-gliding over the glorious coastal waters presents an exhilarating option.
The jetty on Apollo Bay is a focus for entertainments and recreation, on Saturday the foreshore plays host to local markets where visitors can browse through a range of interesting stalls and there are also a selection of fine restaurants, cafes, pubs and a great fish shop to enjoy on the pier.
Apollo Bay is also a venue for a number of arts and community festivals throughout the year. In January the region hosts an Agricultural show as well as a Painters and Potters Show, while in March the Apollo Bay Music Festival and an Offshore Power Boat Race liven up the atmosphere. The opening of Crayfish Season in October is something to be enjoyed by all seafood lovers.
