Andamooka, South Australia : Main Article
The town of Andamooka is some 120 kilometres north of Woomera, to the west of Lake Torrens. It is the state's youngest outback opal mining town with the first opal being discovered in the area in 1930 when two men saw flashes of the gemstones on a hillside and went to investigate.
Historical Attractions
There are numerious semi dug out cottages around the area of the mines which today are National trust classified. Tours operate around these cottages and the mines.
Other Attractions
There are two well known landmarks in the vicinity of Andamooka. The first of these is Andamooka Station. It shares a boundary with Lake Torrens. There is much for you to enjoy on a visit to the station. For starters you can get a feel for life on a station by watching the various activities that go on in the course of the day. Apart from this there is also the opportunity to browse through the original buildings, blacksmiths workshop, which now operates as a museum full of interesting information and displays.
The annual Andamooka Opal Festival takes place at the end of September / beginning of October. There are all kinds of activities including a dance, BBQ's, displays and music and other entertainment.
