from 'OZpedia the Free Guide'

The city of Sydney suburb of Alexandria was named in honour of Princess Alexandra, the wife of the future King Edward VII, the then Prince of Wales. In the early nineteenth century this inner city locality hosted a scattering of residences. However market gardening and mixed farming soon proved unfruitful due to a prevalence of sandy deposits. Alternatively locals engaged in light industries such as candle and soap making.

Its proximity to the city markets and ports of Botany Bay poised Alexandria as a most attractive location for all industry. By the turn of the twentieth century this once residential suburb was consumed by concentrated industry. Today Alexandria forms part of an industrial belt which stretches south, surrounding the Kingsford Smith International Airport, to the waters of Botany Bay.
