Alexandria, Northern Territory : Main Article
Alexandria Station is one of the largest cattle stations around, taking in some 11, 810 square miles with about 62,000 Shorthorns. It was known as 'Box - A Ranch' by American servicemen during the second World War.
It was the North Australian Pastoral Company that formed the station in the last century, with 3500 cattle being brought in from the Collins estates in Queensland. Stores which were required for the general running of the station, were brought in via the sea at Borroloola, having travelled thousands of kilometres to get there initially.
They were then brought up the MacArthur River and met by horse teams who would then bring them the final stretch of the journey, 600 kilometres to Alexandria. All of this to avoid the customs duty which they would have been subject to had they gone overland.
Connells Lagoon Conservation Reserve is set in an area of 25,890 hectares and not far from the station. The black soil plains support four species of Mitchell grass and abundant bird life.
